Apple Inc. has announced the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, which it has named Apple Operations India. This is part of its expansion for research and development in the country. This wholly-owned subsidiary will focus on hardware development, failure analysis, and procurement of engineering equipment. The subsidiary will collaborate with the company in designing and developing new products, thus expanding Apple’s operational footprint further into India.
The move marks Apple’s first big push in the R&D front in India, for traditionally, the company has conducted R&D work in the United States, China, Germany, and Israel. Apple Operations India would directly report to the parent company of Apple, Cupertino, California. It breaks away with the existing structure of the company in India where the local entity, Apple India, is under its European operations and managed through Ireland-based Apple Operations International.
As per reports, Apple has filed a letter of comfort for its subsidiary assuring that it would provide financial and operational backing to the venture into India for the foreseeable future. This move not only increases the technical capabilities of Apple in India but also deepens its commitment to the Indian market beyond just sales and assembly operations.
The company expands just a time when Apple’s healthy performance in India has witnessed record-breaking revenue growth, mainly because of demand for its new iPhone models and iPads. The iPhone maker is reportedly planning to open four new retail stores in the country, in which potential locations could be Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai. So far, the company is working with two flagship stores-one in Saket district of New Delhi and another in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
The company said establishing this Apple Operations India aligns with its broader strategic drive to diversify its global supply chain and strengthen its presence in emerging markets. This R&D hub marks a new chapter in the company’s long-term growth strategy in one of the world’s most important markets.
